The Quest for Ramayana’s Antiquity
Auditing Some of the Most Popular Attempts at Dating Valmiki’s Masterpiece
What is it? 2,000 years? 3,000 years? 7,000 years? 14,000 years? Or not even datable because “mythology, not history”? How old is Ramayana? The question is loaded. More with ideological compulsions than with scholarly intrigue. Needless to say, there’s immense political incentive on either side of the timeline. The deeper its antiquity, the better it serves the conservative Right. Recency, on the other hand, serves the progressive Left. The latter is served even better if the whole thing is somehow made ahistorical. Because the wider the gulf between Ramayana and reality, the easier it gets to delegitimize Hinduism as a philosophy. But away from these ideological organ-measuring contests, the question of Ramayana’s vintage stands its ground, awaiting committed investigation. With the rigor of science.
Luckily for us, many have done just that. And those who have, generally fall into two heavily armed intellectual camps. On one side are the terrestrial realists, the archaeologists, the botanists, and the geologists. Their toolkit consists of spades, carbon-dating assays, and soil core samples. They ask if a bronze-age or iron-age settlement in Uttar Pradesh could ever have matched the golden skyscrapers Valmiki wrote about. They track the native habitats of the sala tree and the migration patterns of estuarine crocodiles, trying to pin a prehistoric story to the physical earth.
On the other side stand the celestial reconstructionists. Their toolkit is commercial planetarium software and ancient verses detailing the positions of the stars. By retrofitting poetic descriptions into modern algorithms, they have mapped the ancient sky to deliver precise calendar dates. Want the exact day Rama was born? They will give you January 10, 5114 BC. Want the year he fought Ravana? They will tell you it was exactly 12,209 BC. To their followers, this is unassailable, high-tech, mathematical proof.
But before any chronology can be accepted, it must first survive an audit. Every proposed date rests on a chain of assumptions about texts, calendars, astronomy, archaeology, geology, ecology, and the very standards by which evidence is interpreted. Some assumptions are explicit. Others have become so familiar that they are seldom questioned. If we want to rescue the Ramayana from both the cynics who dismiss it as pure fairy tale and the pseudo-scientists who twist it into bad astronomy, we have to audit those assumptions, the math in particular. This article is that audit. It strips the competing chronologies down to first principles, tracing each line of reasoning back to its premises and examining how those premises shape the conclusions that follow. The answers may prove less straightforward than either side imagines.
A prerequisite of this inquiry is familiarity with some fundamental science those arguments draw upon, some cosmological concepts integral to the conversation. Only once we’ve done that well, shall we step into the minds of Nilesh Oak, Pushkar Bhatnagar, P. V. Vartak, Dr. Raja Ram Mohan Roy, and others. For the most part, our focus will remain on astronomy, only later shifting to textual analysis in its own right. This approach reflects the methodology adopted by many of the most influential dating attempts, particularly those of Vartak and Oak. In keeping with our tradition, we’ll approach the subject with the highest possible objectivity, according equal voice to all hypotheses, however uncanny or improbable, and only let cold hard evidence be the guide.
